This was one of those spontaneous photo shoots where I looked at the sky and thought, 'this would make for a nice backdrop to some portraits.' I got in contact with Joel Edwards, a good friend and aspiring actor/model to see if he would be up for a quick shoot. It turns out Joel was off work and so we found a field with a clear view of the sunset sky.
We went out with one strobe (Nikon SB-910), a shoot-umbrella, and a light stand. I started by getting an exposure for the sky, and then placed the strobe within a few feet from Joel, adjusting the power my flash to pop a some fill light onto him. For the photos below, I used a Sigma 35mm lens attached to a Nikon D4. My settings varied slightly different times during the sunset, but on average I was around 1/250 sec. @f/8, ISO 100.
